NMMSS Scholarship 2026-27: Last Date Extended to 31 October, ₹12,000 a Year for Class 9 Students

Overview

The Union Ministry of Education has given students more time to apply for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the academic year 2026-27. In a release published through the Press Information Bureau on 1 October 2026, the ministry said applications on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) can now be submitted until 31 October 2026. The extension covers both fresh applicants and students who are renewing an existing scholarship.

NMMSS is meant for bright students from families with limited income who study in government, government-aided or local body schools. The aim is to reduce drop-outs after Class VIII by giving a yearly scholarship that continues up to Class XII. If you cleared your state’s NMMS selection test, or you are already receiving this scholarship and moved to the next class, this extension is your window to finish the online form.

Important Dates

StageDate
NSP open for academic year 2026-27From 1 June 2026
Last date for students to apply (fresh and renewal)31 October 2026
Verification by Institute Nodal Officer (Level 1)Up to 15 November 2026
Verification by District Nodal Officer (Level 2)Up to 30 November 2026

The two verification dates matter to students too. Your form only moves forward after your school (Level 1) and then the district office (Level 2) approve it, so submitting on the last day leaves little room to fix a mistake your school points out.

Scholarship Amount and Number of Awards

  • Amount: ₹12,000 per year, paid directly into the student’s bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
  • Fresh awards: one lakh new scholarships are given every year to Class IX students.
  • Continuation: the scholarship can be renewed for Classes X, XI and XII, provided the student meets the academic conditions prescribed under the scheme.

According to the ministry, by 30 September 2026 the portal had received 88,522 fresh applications and 1,97,133 renewal applications for this year. Since one lakh fresh slots are available, eligible Class IX students who have not yet applied should not assume the seats are already filled.

Who Is Eligible

  • Fresh scholarships are for students now in Class IX who have qualified in the selection examination held by their State or Union Territory government.
  • The student must be studying in a state government, government-aided or local body school.
  • The student should have scored at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade) in Class VII, with a 5% relaxation for SC and ST students.
  • Parental income must not be more than ₹3.50 lakh per year.
  • Students already holding the scholarship apply under renewal for Classes X to XII.

Students in private unaided schools, or students who did not clear the state NMMS test, cannot apply as fresh candidates under this scheme.

How to Apply on the National Scholarship Portal

  1. Complete One-Time Registration (OTR) first. NSP describes the OTR as a 14-digit number issued on the basis of the student’s Aadhaar or Aadhaar Enrolment ID, and it stays the same for the student’s whole academic career.
  2. OTR can be done on scholarships.gov.in, through the NSP OTR mobile app, or at a nearby Common Service Centre (the portal lists a ₹30 charge at CSCs).
  3. Log in to NSP with the OTR details and choose the NMMSS scheme for 2026-27, as a fresh or renewal application.
  4. Fill in school, class, income and bank details carefully and upload the documents the form asks for.
  5. Submit before 31 October 2026, then inform your school so the Institute Nodal Officer can verify the form before 15 November 2026.
  6. Check the application status on NSP after the verification stages.

Documents to Keep Ready

  • Aadhaar (or Aadhaar Enrolment ID) of the student for OTR
  • Details of the state NMMS selection test result (for fresh applicants)
  • Class VII marks or grade record, and the latest class result for renewals
  • Parental income certificate showing income within ₹3.50 lakh a year
  • Caste certificate, if claiming the SC/ST relaxation
  • Bank account details of the student for DBT

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying under the wrong scheme on NSP. Many scholarships appear on the portal; pick NMMSS specifically.
  • Choosing “fresh” when you already received the scholarship last year. Existing holders must use renewal.
  • Entering a name or date of birth that does not match Aadhaar or school records, which commonly leads to rejection at verification.
  • Giving a bank account that is inactive or not in a form suitable for DBT, which can hold up payment even after approval.
  • Forgetting to follow up with the school. A submitted form that is not verified by the institute by 15 November cannot move to the district stage.

What Happens Next

After the student deadline, schools verify applications until 15 November 2026 and district nodal officers complete their check by 30 November 2026. Approved scholarships are then paid through DBT. Students should keep their NSP login details safe, since the same OTR is used for renewal in the following years.
