Overview
Bank jobs are among the most popular government-sector careers in India because they offer a fixed salary structure, regular promotions and postings across the country. But for a beginner the system can be confusing: there are several recruiting bodies, many exam names, and each one has its own rules.
This guide explains who recruits for which bank, how the common exams are different from each other, and what a first-time candidate should check before applying. Age limits, vacancies and fees are announced fresh in every notification, so treat this page as a map and the official notice as the final word.

Who Recruits for Which Bank
| IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) | Common recruitment for public sector banks other than SBI, and for Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) |
| SBI (State Bank of India) | Conducts its own recruitment for Probationary Officers, Junior Associates (clerks) and specialist officers |
| RBI (Reserve Bank of India) | Recruits for its own posts, such as Grade B officers and Assistants |
| NABARD, SIDBI and similar bodies | Hold separate recruitment for their own officer and assistant posts |
One practical result of this split: an IBPS score does not get you a job in SBI, and an SBI exam does not count for other public sector banks. If you want both, you have to apply to both.
Main Exam Types Compared
| Probationary Officer (PO) | Entry-level officer. Usually needs a graduate degree. Selection generally has a preliminary exam, a main exam and an interview. |
| Clerk / Junior Associate | Customer-facing clerical post. Usually needs a graduate degree. Selection generally has a preliminary and a main exam, without an interview, plus a test of the local language where required. |
| Specialist Officer (SO) | Officer posts for a specific field such as IT, law, agriculture, HR or marketing. Needs the related degree. |
| RRB Officer Scale I | Officer post in a Regional Rural Bank. Local language skills matter. |
| RRB Office Assistant | Multipurpose clerical post in a Regional Rural Bank. Knowledge of the local language is usually required. |
The exact stages and their weightage are written in each notification, and they can change from one year to the next.
Basic Eligibility Points to Check
- Education: most generalist PO and clerk posts ask for a graduate degree in any subject. Check whether a final-year student can apply and by which date the result must be declared.
- Age: the minimum and maximum age are counted on a fixed cut-off date given in the notice. Reserved categories get relaxation as per government rules.
- Nationality: read the nationality clause; it is the same for most public sector jobs.
- Local language: for clerk and RRB posts, you may need to read, write and speak the official language of the state you apply for.
- Number of attempts: some exams limit the number of attempts for certain categories. This is mentioned in the notice.
How a Typical Bank Recruitment Moves

- Online registration and fee payment.
- Pre-exam training (for eligible categories, if offered) and admit card release.
- Preliminary exam, followed by its result.
- Main exam, followed by its result.
- Interview (for officer posts) and document verification.
- Provisional allotment to a bank as per merit and preference.
